Straight into his room I fled,
And nestled by his side.
The sun shone in a whisper of gold,
For the moon had long since died.
I waited quietly to hear him speak,
For hallowed words untold.
But silence was the king in reign,
And words were not bold.
I gazed up at his beauteous face,
His eyes reposed in sleep.
I yearned for his arms to encircle me,
This fear in me was deep.
I trembled; waiting by his side,
Why would he not wake?
I longed for comfort; his embrace,
This fear from me to take.
Years seemed to pass me by,
I aged on that one day.
I waited so impatiently,
For words he could not say.
And still he slept and would not wake.
And still he slumbered on.
And now the birds were calling out,
But now the sun was gone.
And on that morn, I did despair,
That he would ever rise.
I wanted the warmth of his strong arms,
And the comfort from his eyes.
Minutes fell and crept on by,
In the silence of that place.
I watched the shadows start to sigh,
As they danced with eerie grace.
I watched the birds wheel in the skies,
I saw poppies bob their head.
I turned and gazed at his dear face,
And knew that he was dead.
Yes, his face was reposed, it's true,
Yet in death and not in sleep.
And I had lost my one true love,
And the reaper had his reap.
And the fear in me grew ever higher,
For he'd never again speak.
And I clung to him and held him close,
And kissed the cold skin of his cheek.
For death held him in frosty grip,
And cooled life's warm glow.
And took away my happiness,
To leave me in my cage of woe.
Yes, I know it's a long poem but I kept thinking of more and more things to add so I'm sorry if you got bored.

No, I didn't get bored...I actually felt chills and the hair stood up on my arms...I think that means its good. LOL.
I keep entering these contests that only allow 20 lines or 40 lines and its so....restricting, because some of mine such as the one about Appamattox, had so much to say about Lincoln's death...and the surrender fof the two generals. Then I wrote about the plight of the world while I sit on my fat ass and drink diet cola..how do you restrict yourself to twenty lines??????? It's hard. I guess that's part of the contest. Saying a lot in a few words? Brevity?.... |
