To my house there came, a knock on the door,
The 'Pearl' she did yell. "Knock please no more"
The boss isn't home. He'll be gone for the day,
I expect you, therefore, to please go far away.
They established the fact she was my charming wife,
She was musical, indeed, she could play on a fife.
They wanted to know when old norm'd be back,
Whether I was upstairs, asleep in the sack.
When they were sure that I wasn't at home,
They asked my dear wife for every last poem.
The laureate committee they said that they be,
They wanted my poems to make much out of me.
My wife gave a snort, her way to retort,
She told them my poetry she thought came up short,
Most of it she felt was just so much bunk,
The rest of it.. certainly most of it stunk.
She said I had printed each one on a sheet,
She had lined all her shoes, they felt good to her feet,
Further, she lined many barrels of trash,
Further wrapped chili and further wrapped hash.
"That wasn't all they were good for," she said,
They were excellant to shim up the new baby's bed.
She also told them she followed her wish,
She wrapped what was left of the Friday night fish.
Poets, prepare for the end of the trail,
Matters not if your female or male,
Your kids won't preserve what you spent time to write
I'm about to hand you a terrible fright.
You wasted your time, every poem that you wrote,
You might well have built a pink non-floating boat,
Can't sell them or eat them or change them for bread,
All that it does is sure swell up your head.
My wife is no different then all of your mates,
Your kids are no worse than are mine, by the fates,
Fight not, dear poets, and critique tongue in cheek,
and give this here earth to the ones who are meek.

Oh how I enjoyed this poem Norm...it's really
one of the best of your Norm....I lost 40 years
of my poetry in my house fire....and found out
when I asked friends did they save them....
Well, they did not!. So 40 years went up in
fire..and this is the truth....I'm no liar. It didn't
change my personality, nor my looks. I could
have written several books! But as I look back,
those poems may have saved my life.
They helped me shed tears, and joy, and
alleviated much strife! We can be so happy
that we are blessed with a gift, but if our poems
should get lost or
perish, the well never runs drive. And what it
does for we poets, is keeps our souls, minds,
and hearts brightly alive!
This one is worth 5cents per vote!

P.S. I'd love to live right here on the earth!

Oh, what a funny poem! It made me think and I must agree. Not all people appreciate poets, and sometimes writing poems is seen as wasting time. But what will be our life without poetry, art, music ? Writing poetry gives you pleasure, satisfaction, relief, without these things life will be more dull than it already is.
I really liked this poem, great writing and your style is impeccable :)
Anne :D (Don't let your wife use your poems as scrap paper, buy her some newspaper or something lol :p) |

My dearest Norm I must say, your poems they brighten many a day,I laugh and I chuckle and feel so much better, and your poems the amuse like your lil' bed wetter!
But a laureate dream can't happen at once, their often given to the lil' ol' dunce.
So I am happy with all that I have amassed...
and this laureate dream can kiss my.....***
