war

They came with guns in their groups of war
Dragged us from our homes and broke down our door
Forced to leave our whole life behind
We were faced with a tragedy yet to unwind
Many belongings we had to leave
We’d return to them later, they made us believe
Our friends and family were going through the same
None of us knew we wouldn’t go back again.
Labelled with our yellow bands
So the world could see where we Jews stand
All of us open to abuse and torment
We wanted back our freedom, of which we forwent.
Taken afar, there were many of us
Placed in ghettos, we weren’t to make a fuss
All cramped together – secluded, confined
Already we were losing our mind.
Children were crying, babies screamed
Nothing was possible that each of us dreamed
We were all hungry and food was rare
Living like this was a tainted nightmare
From outside the ghettos we heard the yells
The evilness the outside world impels
The walls surrounding protected us from them
But from our freedom we were condemned.
At times like that you think it’s the worst
Only to find out it’s not yet dispersed
What we thought was the end was just a start
For more was to come to drive us apart.
Once more we were taken to another place
Where hundreds were aligned, face after face
With a look of terror across each one
Knowing that soon their life would be gone
In concentration now were we
Where it seemed forever we would be
Uniformed men ruled our ways
Each of us fearfully counting our days
They took our belongings to find a use
Recycle them to make new produce
Spectacles and shoes, teddies and toys
All the things that once brought us joys
With nothing left, only part of our life
Many were no use to the people causing the strife
Forced on trial to undergo a test
Those who failed savagely put to rest
It took all our strength to stay alive
Though there was no point for us to survive
Eventually each of us could bid farewell
And leave this nightmare, exit this hell
As we got weaker we became no use
Thicker and faster came on the abuse
No jobs for them we could do
After all, we are only Jews
One fateful day, we could hardly move
We’d had no food for our strength to improve
They gathered us together, as one large group
Shooting anyone who as much as drooped
From those of us left they selected a few
Still strong enough to man a job or two
The rest of us - they told us to strip
It was now with death we had to grip
They told us we were going to shower
A few weeks dirt we were to scour
Cleaning ourselves of all the grime
Hundreds of us all at one time
One by one we all marched in
The men watched, bearing wicked grins
Inside the showers looked so real
The door was closed – a tight seal
We waited patiently for the water to come
A noise was heard, in our ears like venom
A cloudy mist filled the room
A toxic gas – we’d reached our doom.
One by one each of us passed
Our souls up to heaven – our bodies lay gassed
To a better life we all now succeed
Pitying the remaining as we climb the steed

Having been to a couple of concentration lagers. I find this poem to be an excellent work of art.No words can describe what the Jewish People went through from thirty three until nineteen fourty five. Let us hope that this may never happen again. Good poem on a terrible happening.Thankyou for the read have a good day from bernard. |

So descriptive
It took me there, I did not want to go but it pulled me inside your poem
It was haunting and terrible
What these people suffered was beyond endurance
I am sat here crying my heart out for all the people who died
Ir ripped at my heart this one
Cannot stop the tears from flowing
Magnificent poem
One of the best poems i have come across
Such a talent you have to write like this

This is both lengthy....and monumental. The length of its lines can only be rivalled by the depth and dolour of your monumental work. Excellent write. |
