Why?

Contributed by Steeleyes on Thursday, 15th January 2004 @ 05:18:04 AM in AEST
Topic: political

I knew as soon as I stepped on their land
This is wrong
Why am I here?
I don’t understand

Such a diamond blue sky
And a heat to kill
an alien culture
where I came to die

In the morning
Were the times I loved the best
The quiet air
The gentle sky dawning

Before anyone screams
I gaze so long
At that childlike sky
the gentle color of my dreams

And too soon the nightmare starts
Wake up!!!
(I only wish I could have slept)
Another gentle day torn in pieces
A grain of sand lies in my cup

Me and my band of brothers
crowd into our Humvee
We're wired up and nervy
All Iraqis seen as “others”

Seen not human as us
The others call them names
But my folks taught me different
“Son, we're ALL on the same bus”

So many don’t want us here
We pass them day by day
They may smile or walk by
Then at night comes the fear

Each second may be our last
(And I begin to wish it was)
As nerves are frayed to breaking
And I think only of the past

Lying awake I see each face
And remember every word
Another world away
Now lost without a trace

Each day here is a nightmare
There was no sense in this
We replaced fear with chaos
Locked inside myself I stare

I am surrounded by horror
I can no longer face
Just hate, fear and dying
My heart a pit of sorrow

With no way out
I just can’t take this any more
I look down at my rifle
So sad, so lost...

I see my only door

I think you did a wonderful job. You are an awesome poet. I think you deserve far more comments. You truly are brilliant in your writing. Very thought provoking.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
