WHO THEN IS THE GREATER THREAT?

Contributed by Steeleyes on Tuesday, 13th January 2004 @ 11:49:17 AM in AEST
Topic: political

It was so vital what should be done after 9/11
So crucial, both for America and the rest of the world
The whole world felt a rush of sympathy and compassion
America had been seen by most of the world for so long
as an arrogant bully, an oppressor of small countries
I know in America the myth is otherwise.
Nevertheless, now there was a chance for a new start
where the rest of the world and the people of America
could unite against all violence and barbarism inflicted upon innocents
We felt one with you in your grief

This was the point for us all to show that we WERE truly different
That we would not fall to the level of murderers
That we believed in justice, the rule of law
That we would form a resolute framework for stability
A world that held in high esteem civilized values
All good men and women connected in resolve
That such horrendous acts would never be seen again

There was SO much goodwill towards America
So much willingness to stand together against terror in all its forms
A new start for the whole world was waiting to be born...

Compare this with the picture that is now clearly emerging
A group of small minded men and women
Blinded by rage and the narrow ignorance of their world views
Determined to overthrow anyone and anything in their path
No matter the consequences
A single-minded myopic vision
That would totally destroy all consensus and goodwill
A gut-reaction, a kick-ass mentality
that had NOTHING to do with statesmanship or good stewardship
A childish arrogance that certain things would be done
No matter what the consequence,
No matter whether legal or not
No matter that so many lies had to be told
No matter that intelligence agencies be corrupted and made into political tools
No matter that the rest of the world should be thrown to the wolves
No matter that all consensus be lost
No matter that the high ethics and integrity of international law
be undermined
No matter that justice be besmirched by the undermining of basic human rights
No matter that these very actions create even greater polarization
and perhaps generations more of terrorist threats and hate-filled minds

These deeply irresponsible people have destroyed the lives
of countless generations to come
They gave in to posturing gestures for short term gain
Rather than connect in firm cohesion and co-operation and maintenance of
the just high ground that could have created a TRUE peace on our planet
A REAL new world of hope, given time, just given time

But these minds were not of the stature necessary
Bush 'Like a blind man in a room full of the deaf'
And now the die is cast
But even though that consensus we all felt after 9/11 is lost
We may still win through

But not with the narrow-minded low IQ policies of such as George W Bush
Oh yes, as the years go by and terrorism continues he may well say:
„Look, we were right, we need to be harder and tougher still.
We have need to use every dirty trick, not hold to principles of justice
that seperate us from them, we lie and jail people without trial, monitor,
spy, cheat and manipulate - but we need to... to beat them…“

But just think of this as he ratchets up the abusive entrapments in the name of freedom…

What if these actions instead of curing instead cause these acts by generating
reasons to hate even more? Create even more polarization, malevolance, even
more hatred? More fear, misunderstanding and add to grievances real or imagined?

There you have a TRUE horror show. More and more grotesque terrorist acts
occuring as more and more heavy-handed responses are called for and delivered
while they only create even more of the same, as they in turn stimulate more cries for
repressive measures and so ad infinitum. In the end our systems of justice, freedom and
democracy are totally and thoroughly corrupted.

Let me ask you in that circumstance...

'Who really will have caused this?'

And…

„Who then is the greater threat?“

That is sadly true. I love your poems because they are sarcastic and filled with such biting truth, that many ppl fail to see, at the same time. Keep on writing the world needs more ppl like u.

Honestly I think this was one of your best. I liked it alot. I remember that all of it. I hate how it was used to justify such cowardly actions. Can't wait for the election.
