Desensitising Influence.

DESENSITISING INFLUENCE…(©Peter Sprenkeler)

The media in general seem to fulfill their role so well,
Keeping the world informed of news and current affairs.
Yet are they unwittingly responsible for a unique phenomenon?
Are they creating a society of diminished humanitarian cares?

For we are inundated with the details of horror and tragedy,
Murder…violence…crimes and human barbarity.
Graphic video and ghastly scenes of terror,
We witness…with almost monotonous regularity.

Do we now hardly notice…the bodies…the blood…the outrage?
Have we become blasé…desensitized…emotionally inert?
Do we hardly raise an interested eyebrow anymore?
We see the awful details over dinner…forget them during dessert.

This has to have a dire and alarming social impact,
Are we becoming a race that has learned not to care?
As long as we are not directly affected by world events,
Do we care little for another’s predicament or indeed welfare?

This trend is not natural…we are a social being,
Are we being dehumanized by a technological beast?
We are just so saturated by so much tragedy,
Are we approaching the position where it bothers us not in the least?

My question is where does this lead to or end?
On a societal level…are we learning to turn away?
It is an insidious pandemic of enormous potential,
The question has to be addressed today.

Are we becoming emotionally robotic…uncaring?
Are we paying the price for constant exposure to so much pain?
Are we in danger of becoming concerned with nothing more?
Than our own personal welfare and material gain?

The media have their rightful uses and values,
But is there a sinister legacy to their technological wares?
It is an issue few would care to dwell on at all,
Are we becoming a desensitized race…that just doesn’t care?

My answer to your excellent question is.....

Not entirely

All sorts of appeals raise huge sums of money. People have not lost their feelings for others in distress.

I'll tell you what de-sensitises. Constant close contact with death and destruction.
I was an Auxilliary fireman in 1940-41 when we were blitzed by the Luftwaffe 400-600 bombers night after night. We spent the days clearing up and digging people (or bits of people) out. Television isn't real. It doesn't stink. You don't smell it. VERY SOON YOU DE-SENSITISE YOURSELF OR YOU WOULD NOT BE MUCH USE.
Later on when I enlisted it was the same story.

People today have become softies, putting flowers at the scene for people they don't even know. Concerning themselves with tradgedies which in yesteryear we never heard about. "Has the global village" finally arrived?( Hooray hooray I say)

I think back to pre-television days whe we used to call the coloured races by derogatory names and actually believed we were superior, We were ignorant. and did nothing to improve matters.

No I think it's not as simple as you make out.

Very powerful statements here, I wonder sometimes if we are desnsitized... very sad to think so.

Nicely done, enjoyed this,
