LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE

I've always stood straight and proud,
with my bell ringing tower held high,
Most folks never paid much attention,
nor even mentioned me for nigh.....
I was just called the "Little Red School House",
and expected to stand by!
I looked like a castle, compared to most.
I have 6 windows on both sides, so I boast.
Most little school houses had none,
at the most three.
No bell towers, no fence, not even a tree!
The majority were so poor,
red paint was too rich.
They white-washed the shingles, and hung
the door upon a niche.
Words leave me at a loss, to explain my history.
Children must be taught, 'twas no mystery.
Find a young single teacher was always first.
Find a family to take her in,
and nurure her aspersed.
My construction was a community doing.....
Each family contributed to build me,
and supply their children's yoking.
A huge pot-bellied stove in the center sat.
Where everyone could feel it's warmth
by the doormat.
Snow boots, leggings, mittens, and coats, close.
For many walked miles to participate,
with frozen toes!
A well-rounded education was
taught in my inside.
No discipline problems, parents were very strict!
No one dare backslide!
I marveled as I watched the teacher each day.
She was a whiz, organizing
several different levels,
at different settings, in a different way!
Listening intently, a passion for
learning, each possessed.
Everyone giving their very level best,
as she finessed!
Winters were long, and many times
big blizzards blew!
We had to spend the night if parents
couldn't get through.
One experience I can't erase from my
memory bell tower
Was the morning James was frozen
to the seat of the outhouse,
cold and bitter!
The older boys had to lift him up, seat and all,
carry him near the fire, so he could thaw!
We then purchased a "slop bucket"
to stay inside!
Quite a luxury after all!
My usefulness as an educator is now
changed to antique.
For I'm now a novelty for those
looking to be unique!
Small homes for newlyweds, or antique buyers.
Also small churches, and cottages for retirers.
I lived such an exciting life, you can be sure.
I've got many memories packed
in my bell tower secure.
I used to see my former students
as they drove by....
But most have died now...I outlived them all,.
as I still stand ready, I can at last
relax with a sigh!
I always felt honored to be The
Little Red School House.
In my day, I was more important than
the Fire House!
At least that's what I've heard them say....
So, now, I know I've more than earned my pay!

old School Houses,
see if you can pick
them out as you
drive down the highway?"

Hmmm interesting though good. I do find it hard to believe thoug the up hill walk for 10 miles in both directions in 20 feet of snow with a bag of rocks slung over their shoulders and no shoes.... Lol. Good write... Hehe. I doubt i'll find any of the old school houses round here though... |
