The lovely old grumpy lady
Who lives across the lane
Shows nothing but a fearful scoul
Beware to all things small
The precious tiny rascally child
Who lives inside my home
Looks to her with smiles abroad
Wonder to all things large
She pranced into her yard one day
A queen with a gleam in her eye
She picked a rose and there I stood
Preparing for the worst
That trifle move my daughter made
Brought tears upon her face
She came to me with child in tow
With just one thing to say
The single rose she watched from birth
Contained a single soul
She sat and nursed it from a bud
Each day it's beauty grew
That lost soul once contained a life
A sinless, cherished child
Til the day that it consumed her
That sickness that took her life
She'd kept that rose so perfect and pure
To place upon her grave
The three of us sat crying
Emotions all but sank
And then my treasured daughter
Blew the both of us away
She said she had sister
Of whom she never knew
And wondered if it'd be ok
For her to keep the bloom
She'd keep it in some water
She wouldn't let it die
She looked up to those scouly eyes
Where the tears were streaming down
She said "I know your lonely"
"Mary can I be your friend?"
I saw her the other day
Out working in her yard
The scouly look burned on face
The memories of that day scarred
From up the street my daughter peered
Riding on her bike
And as she passed by Mary's house
I saw a little smile...

Seeings how this is a true story..you can imagine the sobs that came from me on that day...and then again when I wrote it. I read it on the phone the other day to my grandma and she cried as well. I am so happy to see that it has touched you in the same way. I like to put forth feeling in my poems...try to capture just what it was I felt that day...Many moochies to you dear Terry :) |
