Snake Eyes
December 29, 2003

Going in, you knew it was a test.
Of fate and your destiny, all laid on the line.
So you swallowed your fear you dressed your best.
These next weeks would seal your future and make your life.
They will know if you did, or did not kill your wife.
Your lawyer, a new friend,
Standing beside, does not comprehend.
Every day, he defends,
But he cannot know what it is.
What it is to be gawked at and refused,
To be scared, sorry, and confused.
The judge, dressed in robes, only probes,
At your answers, and your expressions.
He only wants your confessions.
The man, to your left, behind the table,
Questions you, threatens you, makes you unstable.
And all those eyes, twenty-four, will make your duration.
Twelve unknown faces, in their orderly places,
Mapping your continuation,
At their own paces.
And when that door is opened,
And the jury comes through, trying to avoid locking eyes with you,
There's no emotion but hope left to desire,
Hope that they spared you, that they believe you aren't a liar.
Standing, then seated, all rise, and all fall.
Am I defeated? Is this all?
A booming voice in the deadly silence,
Proclaims an announcement, a judgement to this violence.
On the charge of second degree murder,
The woman's voice declairs what they confer.
We find the defendant,
Oh please, you think, as you hold your pendant...
Guilty.
Your hands to your face before you can cry,
A single tear that streams down form your eye.
And on the second offense,
What about my defense?
On the charge of first degree murder,
I didn't mean to hurt her...
We find the defendant,
Back in time, and I could mend it...
Guilty.
No. No I couldn't.
I'm going to jail, without bail,
For the rest fo my life,
Because of what I did to my wife...
Snake eyes, guilty on both accounts,
I don't even know anymore, just what counts,
Behind bars of steel and a life built on one last lie,
I can cry. I can die.
