Ruffle your feathers at me, Lovely,
Like the Lord of the Flock
Flaunts his scarlet crest
To catch the skittish eye
Of the lady-bird who flew
Like a dust-brown whirlwind
Across his forest path.
Is she hiding in the grass?
Or taken refuge in the brush?
Over the sound of rustling leaves
Does he hear her catch her breath?
Oh, for the sight of him -
He knows, he knows,
She sees him from her hidden place,
The loveliest of the flock, Love,
Round and round he dances,
Like a brazen little king,
Little bird, shy bird,
Concealed in the shadows,
Clumsy little duchess, lady in waiting.
