SHE CHOSE HAPPINESS

Contributed by lovingcritters on Thursday, 25th December 2003 @ 08:57:12 PM in AEST
Topic: InspirationalPoems

I've always enjoyed fairly good health
for a woman of my age.
I volunteer at the local nursing home as a page.
I help the olders ones get settled in, and comfortable,
It takes some a while to adjust, I try to be useful.

A little 92 year old petite, and well-poised
and proud lady,
sat waiting patiently in the lounge as I
arranged her room.
I was told she was always up at 8,
fully dressed, with her hair coifed, and make-up
perfectly applied, she appeared
to be a lovely heirloom.

She smiled sweetly when I told her,
"Your room is ready."
As I maneuvered her walker
to the elevator steady.
I gave her a visual description of her tiny room,
for she was legally blind.
I began, "Eyelet sheets hang at
your windows unlined.....

"I love it, " she stated right off.....
with much enthusiasm and glee.
You would have thought she was an 8 year old
with a new puppy.
"But Mrs. Jones, you haven't seen your room,
wait until you see it!"
"That hasn't anything to do with it,"
she replied to me.

"Happiness is something you decide
ahead of time.
Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend
on how it looks,
but how I've arranged my mind, and you see
I've already decided to love it!
It's the same decision I make every morning
I dress, and put on my outfit."

In the morning when I wake up, I have a choice...
Spend the day in bed inventorying all my body
parts that won't work.....and invoice,
Or, I can get out of bed and be thankful for
those that do!
It's another beautiful day of life that's
been given you!"

"Each day I open my eyes and focus on the new
day, and all the happy memories I've stored away.
When my husband of 70 years died,
I knew here, I'd have to come.
I've been storing for years,
for the days of winsome."

"Old age is like a bank account~you withdraw
whatever you put in.
So my advice to you would be to deposit a lot
of happy memories within."

She then thanked me for having a part,
in filling her Memory Bank's Heart.
She then added, "I am still depositing.
Remember these five simple rules for happy living.
Free your heart of hatred, Free your mind of worry.
Live simply, Give More, Expect less,
and be worthy!"

She ended our conversation with a quote of wisdom.
"Travel light and you can sing in the
robber's face."....Juvenal

As I walked to my car on this snowy cold night.
A brave, courageous soul was she, a delight!
She had already chosen her path
in life always.
That of happiness, joy, and praise,
with each phase.

"I had come to help her, but I was blessed
far more than she!"

"Chose to be happy
each day, and you will be!"

"This story was sent to me in an e-mail
Since I volunteer at the nursing home
I made it my story. There was no Author.
The poem is mine."

I love your poetry so much! Everytime I read something you have posted I go away feeling like i'm a better person because I read it. Same with this poem, it was really inspirational and I the part that caught my eye was--"Chose to be happy each day, and you will be"
This rings true for me..
