Beautiful People

Topic: EmotionalPoetry

I look all around at them
These beautiful people
Frown, sigh, and wonder
Why was I not made one of them ?

There are so many of them, grains of a desert sand
The sleek, latin angel with the cascading hair
And eyes so dark
Black as coals in the fresh fallen snow

To the left he walks so debonaire and proud
Pauses to let them admire the cut of his cloth
Speaks in a low but definite tone
As he runs slender fingers through thick golden mane

I stop, catch sight of the cruel mirror
Another line where there were once so few
Eyes tired of always being in the shadows
Full of longing to be noticed

All around me they laugh and joke
Animated faces sparkle with life
I want to shout out so loud that I am here too
But they are so many and I am only one

She smiles at me, freezes time for a moment
Long red dress swirling about her feet, she glides across the room
I smile too, then realise
She is looking past me, captive to the man in the corner sipping his wine

They seem to have so many friends
This circle of perfection grows
What twist of the knife is this that scars my thoughts
Pushes me to the outside

On the fringe of their world I can realise
Something perhaps they will take time to see
Beauty fades like a withering flower
Nature's hand can be so cruel

In this great life I am still beautiful
In a way that does not dim with the passing of time
Look for that flame that burns in everyone
Beauty that lies inside
