friends or enemies

Friends disappear,
Stricken with fear,
None of them sincere.
None trustworthy,
All fail me,
Don't understand loyalty.
Put themselves first,
Leaving you in the dirt,
At your worst.
Don't know the meaning of support,
Keep conversations short,
Every plan they set out to thwart.
All they do is cause hurt,
Cries of pain all I manage to blurt,
He knows how to make everything hurt.
Promises unkept,
Truth a fictional concept,
Lies well kept.
Little or no time to spare,
I just wanted a minute to share,
They don't care.
Their concern is fake,
They mainly slither like a snake,
Rapturously watching you burn at the stake.
In fact they sparked the flame,
Only you are to blame,
You invited them to play the game.
They took you for granted,
They listened as you ranted,
Told you this friendship would be the one that lasted.
Only to set you up for the fall,
To mock you as you crawl,
Toward the inner sanctum of your wall.
The wall built to withstand,
Emotional intruders small and grand,
Alas, you left the guardtower unmanned.
You let someone into the courtyard,
It will be your graveyard,
The friendship you should have barred.
Since "friends" abandon you on life's journeys,
And confine your soul to your own belfries,
'Tis it truly better to have friends than enemies?
