The pitter-patter of my footsteps
Sound loudly against the empty street—
Tonight fog is my only companion.
The air, heavy with cold,
Chills the body as well as the mind.
A sensation of shivers
Pulses through me, but not only from the wintry weather.
Strange houses leer out at me
As I wander into unfamiliar territory.
It seems my companion has led me astray.
Another echoes my pitter-patter—
I am not alone, not alone—
My heart pounds brutally against my ribs,
And a heavy rasping permeates the air
As the houses fly past in an array of blacks and grays.
Finally a familiar house stands out of the shadows—
Panic subsides, subsides—
I have beaten the foes nobody knows
And the shivers are gone, gone.

Very vivid. Reminds me of Edger Allen Poe. I like it.
