How It Is When Someone Dies

Is this what it's always like?
When someone is dying?
Dreading every phone call
And not knowing how you'll feel
And worrying that after all these years
Of grownups never crying
It hurts my head to think that they will.

Is this what it's always like?
Thinking of them, right now,
Right now they could be breathing their last breath
Wondering, are they in pain?
Or peaceful.
Wondering what it will be like without them
Imagining the unimaginable.

What are they thinking right now?

Did you remember to tell them I love you?

And what if tomorrow is a beautiful day?
What if the sun is shining and it's warm out
(But not too hot, no, just perfect)
And what if someone sent them a gift in the mail?
All colorful and wrapped in ribbons
And a sparkly Hallmark 'Get well soon'
What if the whole world feels good tomorrow?

And what if all the wars are over?
What if world peace comes
Or whatever they've always wanted
And what if, after a lifetime of wishing

What if they're not here tomorrow to see it?
