Jaded Smile
September 17, 2003

Class, bring this back with your Mommy and Daddy’s signature, okay?
I want it back by Monday.

Don’t forget to tell your parents about Back to School Night.

You’ll be alright...
It’s just a little scrape,
We’ll call your mommy while we fix it with a bandage and tape.

You can’t just reach up,
Grab her wrists and tell her to her face,
Teacher-lady I’d appreciate it if you knew,
And used,
A different word instead of mommy and daddy.
Don’t you see?
Maybe some kiddies can’t say, Mom, I’m home,
When they walk in the door from school.

I’ve been a fool.
I should I have kept this all buried,
Let my reality be carried,
In stories, fables, lies...
You should just tell them,
That your mommy and daddy died.
Then they wouldn’t ask questions anymore...
But they’d look at you funny,
Treat you different because your heart is sore.
Try to make your shaded life sunny.
Try to make your jaded smile happy,
Kill the sorrow that makes me sappy.
Kill the parents still hiding,
Tell everyone it’s just your mind you’re fighting.
People think you’re weird, don’t they?
Scared to talk to you, don’t know what to say.
Scared they might strike a topic of tears.
Don’t you wish you could them with shears?
Cut mirrors, cut fears, cut years...
Dice your life, halve it into two.
The good and the bad,
Chop, chop til your not mad.
I need a clean slate,
One to practice how to spell love and not hate.
School can teach me past presidents,
But I learn on my own, my presence.
Where do I belong,
How can I be strong?
They can’t tell you that,
You live life hating minutes,
Finding demension in things they call flat.
School is life,
Hard work, bad grades, and little breaks.
Seems like no matter how hard you try,
That call home always makes you cry...
Try to make your shaded life sunny.
Try to make your jaded smile funny.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
