The Carrier Launch

THE CARRIER LAUNCH

Make your way through the labyrinth of danger and obstacles that mar your path.
Your gray world moving through a sea of consistent, unbroken horizon.
Check your mount, don’t miss a thing, looks good; thumbs up; strap in.

There you sit, a modern knight on fiery steed.
Your squires scurry below, preparing you and your charger for the adventure ahead.

Surveying the field you see and intricate mesh of men and machinery;
Each giving purpose and support to the other;
All orchestrated by an unseen conductor.

A handler comes and directs you and your courser.
Slowly you trot.
Waves of workers part before you, showing their respect for the beast controlled by the reins that you hold.

At last in position, the endless lists of checks are complete.
A final lean forward is thwarted by the webbing of straps that mold man and machine into one cohesive unit.
Ready to go.

Slowly you unleash the full fury of your captive stallion.
A wipe out of the controls ensures you won’t get bucked off your man made Pegasus.
Now salute the gate keeper who, with a magician’s motion, bends and points down a steaming track.

Your steed bolts forward; pushing you deep in the saddle.
Faster and faster you race toward the open sea;
At the last instant leaping skyward, breaking the bonds that held you fast to the earth and floating stable below.

“Charger Four Zero One, airborne.” Free once more…

I've always wondered what it would feel like to fly. I'd always imagined feeling an overwhelming sense of freedom. Your poem not only confirms that but elaborates on it. You've managed to make the excitement and sense of power you must feel almost tangible. I'm impressed and I like your work.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
