We got the call, we’re on our way,
It looks like we’re going to earn our pay,
We’re armed response team Foxtrot Delta Three,
A man has gone mad with a gun,
They say that he has shot some-one,
And holds a hostage on a balcony,
When we get there it’s getting late,
The man is crazy, near irate,
The hostage held before him like a shield,
He screams you do as you are told,
Or this one never will grow old,
One wrong move and the lady here gets killed,
The negotiators megaphone,
Bursts into life , in sombre tones,
Urging everybody to stay calm,
He says don’t shoot, lets all relax,
All we wants the woman back,
You’re safe as long as she remains unharmed,
The man you shot is doing well,
Another inch and who can tell,
But luckily this time, he’s still alive,
He speaks as I crawl round the roof,
But all he says is not the truth,
An hour ago the other victim died,
We must keep him talking at all costs,
If he suspects, then all is lost,
And the woman that he holds, don’t have a prayer,
He’ll cut her down and not think twice,
I can see that clearly in his eyes,
As he holds her by a handful of her hair,
I crawl around a nearby roof,
Avoiding tiles that are loose,
And take up my position to his left,
He slaps his hostage in the face,
Shouts at the police, that’s just a taste,
Of what’s to come, if you don’t do what’s best,
Get your men away from here,
He pressed his gun against her ear,
I swear I’ll blow her brains across the wall,
I cannot get a line of fire,
I turn and climb a little higher,
He hits the hostage more until she falls,
Then in my earpiece, crisp and loud,
If you get a shot then take him down,
He’s no intention now to set her free,
And in my scope he looks so near,
All on his own the hostage clear,
Still with him, but now she is on her knees,
He tries to pull her up somehow,
Still screaming out I’ll kill her now,
She’s made a fool of me for long enough,
I’ve never killed a man before,
Can I do it.? I’m not sure,
But this threat he makes I know is not a bluff,
It seems the hostage is his wife,
Determined now to take her life,
I must decide, there’ll be no second chance,
I squeeze the trigger, slow but tight,
As soon as he is in my sights.
And time slows till it ceases to advance,
I hear the bark and then it’s done,
Another life lost to the gun,
And through the scope I see my target fall,
His pistol falling from his grip,
He halfway turns, and then he slips,
My earpiece comes to life as some-one calls,
They say good shot, you took him down,
And everybody gathers round,
But I wonder am I just as bad as him,?
He threatened life, I know that’s true,
And he’d have killed, I know that too,
But what’s he done, that’s not been done by me.?
How is it right what I have done,?
Was he not once some mothers son, ?
Have I the right to say who lives or dies,
I see his victims great relief,
As constantly she’s thanking me,
And know that what I done, made her survive,
My colleagues slap me on the back,
And say your good and that’s a fact,
You should be proud you laid that scumbag low,
Just one clean shot, no fuss or mess,
It’s clear that they are so impressed,
But I just wish that they’d leave me alone,
They say that it was him or her,
But how could anyone be sure,
They say they would have shot him if they could,
But I feel so wretched deep inside,
Because of me, somebody died,
I cannot understand how this is good,
It’s not the way I visualized,
That it would be to take a life,
I thought that it would be so crystal clear,
There’d be no doubt, no second thought,
I’d do it just as I was taught,
But still I hear the recoil in my ear,
He raised his head, and looked at me,
I held my breath instinctively,
That moment just before the bullet struck,
His head snapped back, his eyes were wide,
Still looking at me as he died,
That vision deep inside my mind is stuck,
I see his face as he was hit,
The way it spun him round a bit,
The way his hands flew up beside his head,
He moved his lips as though to say,
Something, but then his legs gave way,
And that’s the moment I knew he was dead,
They told me not to blame myself,
And I’d say that to some-one else,
I’d say they didn’t really have a choice,
But it was me that shot to kill,
I can’t forget, I never will,
Inside my head I still can hear his voice,
I know I only did my job,
But who says I can act as god,
And say which one must die and who can live,
If there’s a heaven or a hell,
And only god himself can tell,
I hope he’ll understand and so forgive.
