Threshold of Perseverance

Topic: DarkPoetry

Lovers walk on a sunset beach
Holding hands, an unbreakable bond
Sharing a kiss as horizon engulfs the light
A brief moment where troubles are gone

Whirls of dust swirl and gather
As they struggle to escape the flowing sands
In a vaccum they are pulled under
Feeling powerless, it's out of their hands

Still choking he returns to his feet
Rubbing the burning quicksand from his eyes
Panicked, his heart skips a beat looking for his love
Breathes a sigh when he sees where she lies

Together again they set forth
In a sprawling and sinuous maze
Stalactites hang in this hewn rock tomb
Feeling endless and leaving them in a daze

A small trickle of water flows
Almost a beacon in the darkness shining
Bringing them to an expansive cavern
With a tiny light as a silver lining

Embracing in a moment of calmness are the two
Interrupted by a violent rumble in the distance
The tiny water flow swells into raging
Gasping and fighting the flash flood they are swept away like ants

Washed in the rapid current
Their hands clasped together as before
As their oxygen begins to expire
They are violently hurled as rags upon the shore

Narrowly escaping a watery demise
With shaking legs they support one another to stand
As weary heads are slowly raised up
A twilight forest begins to expand

With great effort passing through the dim golden light
Withered leaves are crushed beneath their feet
Limbs twisting and obstructing their path
Crawling on bloody knees, ready to accept defeat

With his last ounce of strength he carries his love
Her will beginning to steadily fade
When suddenly the path opens wide
And at last they come to rest in a breathtaking glade

Flat on their backs and nearly paralyzed
Just enough energy to turn their heads and smile
A loving gaze into eachother's eyes
Knowing they can pass any trial

As his eyes began to draw closed
His ear picked up the sound of a twig breaking
Like bolts of lightning vines screamed through the foliage
Constricting his wrists, dragging him shaking

He screamed and watched helplessly
As the earth broke around her exhausted frame
More writhing vines entangled her legs
Locked in position, drained and defenseless all the same

From beneath the forest canopy
A howl approaches and becomes many
A dozen sets of piercing yellow eyes
The starving pack that feasts on all and any

Surrounding, they converge on his true love
Too enervated to let loose another scream
Overcome with a sense of total disbelief
His eyes shut, his head lowers, wishing to awaken from this dream
