I did not see, nor understand
What they meant by “careless”
Or by the word “cruel”
But careless cruely describes
My love, my passion--both
Describe you.
I watch you leave, though I cry out
Your ears can be deaf like wood,
Your form like wood,
Your heart is hollow like wood,
And I wonder if you knew that your face
Had become like wood, hiding
The truth inside. Finally, as you turn your back
My tears fall and wash aside the blindness
I see the dead leaves and broken branches
The madness of your chaotic destruction
As you tried to win my love. But now
My love is unwanted. It has become
Your dead leaves and my heart is your
Broken branches. Slowly, as the wind
Of time blows across the empty courtyard
The dead leaves are scattered. The sound
Of scraping against cobblestone ground
Reflects off the stone of my cobbled heart.
