In The Corner Sits A box

Walking through the door
Of a house engulfed in shadows
Beads of sweat on my brow
Nervous shakes induced by the unknown
The moon casting ineffectual light
Through one tiny window
In the corner sits a box
Illuminated from the light
Through the one tiny window
Eerily calling out to me
Drawing me closer
As if telling me I need it
Shaking hands fumble the box open
Fear consuming me
Locking my eyes shut
Anticipation of the worst
Freezing my movement
Forcing my eyes open
With calming pep talk thoughts
I hold my breath and look into the box
With a sigh and a smile
A rush of relief comes over me
Just a pile of photos
Picking up the first one
Me as a child…
But I can’t remember this event
Or the next ones…
Something sparks on the third
Brining back a wave of memories
Not so precious moments in time
Forgotten by the conscious mind
Logged and documented
Filed away for a much stronger day
Hidden deep within the shadows
Waiting for that one moment of light
