He chuckled in the elevator
Rememb'ring things before
And how he'd loved the starry skies
A tune without a score
The door groaned, straining
Against its hinges
An echo of things now gone
The metal creaked open
He knew within--
--It'd been far too long--
A chilly eve was all it seemed
A breezy velvet night
A smile slid slow across his face
But something wasn't right
As hand met rung it clasped with haste
And up the child ascended
Seeking things he'd known before
Scouring pains unmended
And then he stood
His eyes aimed high
His shadow bright as day
He looked above
Searching the sky
But it'd gone away
It was gone
Gone from within
Forever left behind
He'd not a trace
Nor slightest clue
His pain had made him blind
Then deep embedded within his soul,
He began to hurt
A calloused heart was stabbed again
Yet no blood would ever spurt
There was no wind to chill his face
Nor frigid, pale moon dimmed
For all his tries he'd forgotten the taste
--His cold was all within--
He blinked in a struggle
The hollow craving returned
He shivered to shadows
For the things that he'd yearned
As knee hit the ground a sad smile lit his features
As a man who had lost all his faith
For dreams and desires could be taught with no teacher
His last wish now colorless wraiths
It would never come back;
He knew it for truth
He'd lost once before
Now he'd lost all his youth
He chuckled again as his feet walked inside
Still smiling on things of past
A tear struck the ground as the doors closed behind him
--The best things never last--
