“You’re so lucky,”
she said in earnest
to the son she’d adopted
years ago.
“You don’t have to wear
suntan lotion.”
she said as she
massaged the cream
lovingly into the flesh
of her own progeny.
“Why am I lucky?”
he responded, jealous
of the gratuitous love
his mom didn’t wish for him.
“Well, your dark skin
won’t burn” she said
as she kissed the white
boy on the cheek and
sent him down the shore
to play with his brother.
