Dear Pleading Mother
September 16, 2003

Dear Mommy,
Did I forget to tell you I was sorry?
Last time I saw you I felt like oragami.
I write to tell you now,
What I've planned to tell you all my life.
Every day another wasted attempt,
To tell you, you were a mother and a wife,
But you were never such a friend.
I wanted to let you know,
I was there, under the window,
The day you told my Dad,
One more day around us would drive you mad...
Ever since that night,
I tried to be better, to not fight.
I always wanted your approval and love,
But I found it not in you, but above.
I asked the Lord to bless you every night,
I kissed my cross right before I turned off the light.
And when I lay me down to sleep,
I long to know when you weep,
If your life is rocky and steep.
I wonder if you think of me,
My brother and my sister, your children.
There's three of us all feeling different,
All needing that mom-figure, that friend.
Don't worry though, we're fine.
It's too late to try and play the role,
We've grown up and filled that hole.
Thought I'd write to let you know,
That we did survive and now are grown.
Your eldest girl is out of school and working on her own,
She's got a house and a dog too,
Where were you?
Your youngest boy is now in high school,
And growing up with that hole too.
Where were you?
And me, well let's just say...
I've spent hours everyday,
Pondering life, love, hate, and fate,
Wondering what to do.
Where were you?
I once read, Mom, that it's easier to live,
If you stay mad as long as you can, because when you stop,
You're sad...
I don't mean to be the role-model cop,
Yelling in faces telling people their places,
But I want to assure you,
My words are true but so are you,
So you see half in all this mind-math,
Of what I feel, you see the deal.
The part of me I want to show,
Not the part you cannot know.
You cannot know because I cannot show,
It hurts too much to just let go.
My words, Mom, may see so harsh,
But this is just the hardest part.
Deep down I want to get to know you,
Accept you and show you,
Even if I know I'll never be your little girl,
You'll never be my Mommy.
A pleading mother is sad to another,
So hello, from me, my sister, and my brother.
Say hi to Dad, I hope your not mad,
Just wanted to show what you probably already know.
Good night Mom, Good night Dad,
Little brother, don't be sad...

Wow heartfelt, beautiful, sad and painful. I have never known this but this poem just let me feel the saddness...this was so good. A really good write on a really horrible thing to go through. Thanks so much for sharing. Take care.

Emma.
