the marriage contract

Contributed by Merry on Sunday, 23rd November 2003 @ 11:04:42 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

he was trained to smile
no matter how much pain he felt
he was taught to hide
his feelings without blinking
thinking this made him a man

she was taught to smile
be graceful under pressure
pretend that everything is alright
no matter how bad it gets
this made her the perfect wife

together they suffered silently
smiling fools while suffering
living separate lives together
one as lonely as the other
they called each other honey

days and nights of pretending
they were happy in their plight
became a way of life
they numbed themselves with alcohol
and any kind of drug that they could find

anniversaries into decades now
it was a matter of pride
leg shackled for the long haul
to be the last ones standing
smiles on their plastered faces

no waking up with strangers
no hanging out in bars
this was the perfect marriage
she's from venus and he's from mars
vowed to stay together until death do them part

merry

I liked this a lot - I would never allow myself to end up in a relationship that stagnates like this..the above is a fine reminder of why not lol.
I recall the words of Stephen Wright: 'Woman are from earth, men are from earth, deal with it' lol!! ...keeps it all down to earth i feel lol.
Excellent poem.

Regards

Terry

Excellent write Merry, very true for so many
I always said I'd never live like that, and My when it came down to the last penny, I endured even more just for the sake of a terrible break!
But, now that I'm out, I look back, and see just how terribly black.....why did I stay so long? Same old song. I was waiting for someone to rescue me? I finally decided that someone had to be ME!
i JUST LOVED THIS POEM MERRY!
