I Traded the Ring

Contributed by SensitiveSoAbused on Saturday, 22nd November 2003 @ 08:31:17 PM in AEST
Topic: AmericanTragedy

They told me it was an accident.

“A white Honda Accord
careened through the barrier
on the highway from Terrace
to Valemount…”

It was raining, and experts say
you slipped,
or did not see the iron guard.

But I know the truth…
I know of your acrid tears, unwanted,
knuckles white,
trembling with rage.
I know of your family,
your mother, whiskey shotglasses,
and your father,
a needle still in his arm,
“eat it, boy, it’s good for you”
You were six, and didn’t know better.
You spent the night in the corner
Naked, unblinking,
watching your mother
vomit over herself
glassy eyed.

I was the closest to you,
so they let me view your body.
The entire left side
of your face was crushed
when you soared into the rock,
amid the sparkling glass of the windshield.

I looked at your mangled body,
its cuts, bruises and burns,
I remember your mom,
and the Ken Griffey Slugger he used
to kill her.
You tried to stop him,
but he broke your knee;
you were forced to watch when
the cops gunned him down
at 3:28 in the morning.

So as your car bounced, slammed and hurtled
down the cliff, and your beer bottles
shattered around the cab,
I hope you thought of me,
and how much I cared for you.

Now your little boy and I are lonely
Yet again
for The Powder, The Spoon, The Lighter,
and The Needle,

I traded the ring.
