The Lonesome Swan

Contributed by MisterRight on Sunday, 25th August 2002 @ 08:49:26 PM in AEST
Topic: LostLove

Yesterday morn I found myself walking
By a pond nearby my home
There I saw a beautiful swan
Swimming all alone

There were ducks, geese, and others
Though he didn’t fit among the rest
He had this look of determination
As if he were on a quest

Without fear, he let me approach
Close enough to look in his eyes
I could see such hurt, such pain,
And a heart, out of lonesomeness, cries

I leaned towards him a bit closer
Wondering why he seemed so glum
To my surprise he spoke
“I’ve lost my only one.”

“Since she’s been gone I’m alone
There’s no other I’d call mine
I’ve lost my ability to fly
And my feathers have lost their shine.”

“I can’t tell you when I lost her
Or even if she lost me
Either way makes no difference
It’s with her I need to be.”

He paused for a moment and looked at me
As if I were another in his way
In the way of his hopes and dreams
Of reuniting with his love someday

I leaned forward to console him
Though he shied away from my touch
At that moment he continued
“I miss her, oh, so much.”

“If you’d ever seen us together
You’d say they’ll never part.
The way we swam beak to beak,
Our necks formed the perfect heart.”

“Swimming among the lilies
Along the waters edge
Sometimes I swear I see her
Though it’s just a vision in my head.”

“Now I spend my days searching
Searching from dawn till dusk
She’s my one true love, my companion
I’ll search forever if I must.”

“I hope one day she’ll return
And swim with me like once before
Till then I’ll search this pond for her
For eternity, or even more.”

Just then it occurred to me
Though I hadn’t the heart to say
I’d seen his love swimming with another
In a pond across the way

I lowered my head in sadness
And when I looked up he had gone
I’m sure he went to continue his search
But eternity seems so long

I will never forget that swan
A beautiful creature, but so sad
Holding onto all he has to offer
To give only to the love he once had

It's a great analogy to all the heartbreak that we ourselves go through. It seems strange that no matter what we do, sometimes it'll never be enough to keep the ones we love close to us. All we can do is search, and hold on to lost hope for an eternity... and yes, eternity does seem way to far away...
