Awake
I’m awake
I’m awake again
Listening to soft songs and starting the slow dance inside
You came to me as the lover
Who could change everything important
Wearing a light blue jumper in the Sun
And me, so young
With tabloid eyes and a joker’s heart
I’d never seen a natural beauty
But plenty of plastic paraded thru this street
Watching models dance on Channel 23
Hooked on E News
Living life like it was big movie with hookers instead of actors
You know how the song goes
They teach it at birth these days
You put your trust in the endless ocean of image
You close your eyes they feed your brain
Become a puppet with bloody strings and a dirty past
Don’t ask why
Change the channel
It don’t bother me
Let’s watch some TV
Let’s see some false prophets practicing their divine right to speak
On the late night show where the cross is crooked, neon, and divided
Where the men talk and talk but never ask why:
Who made them the servants of the Hand?
And every year they take a little bit more fiction and make it someone’s Reality.
You think they care about India? You think they care about you or me?
I could almost quote scripture.
Make no mistake this is a protest.
Make no mistake this is a dark age.
But the people on TV called it Enlightenment.
Because they can’t cut the ties that bind
Because they can’t answer the questions its all mirage its all blood money
O but they know how to kiss your lips with perfumed lies
And they tattoo you
With false idols and the vision of humans clothed as gods
They even tempt you with religion
When all you want is the Holy Sea
They say the Devil is a man like me and you
And man they left a mark on me
O the sleepers who have never seen Love
We run like ghosts in halls
We run like prisoners to freedom
When I was alone and 16
I always thought
Every romance led to the warm Sea
I always thought
My heart would never break or bow
But I longed for that one person who could answer all my questions
And bring this stormy place some peace and shelter from the wind
Honey when I saw you
Everything became so clear
Sometimes the feelings tear away your mask and feed upon the heart
Just so you can be naked before the morning light
And then in the morning the goddess comes and bathes your ruined eyes
I thought I had everything
I lost it all, I gave it away
I woke up inside the illusion
I forgot about being the bad guy with the big gun
When I touched the flesh of another runner
When I felt your pain that cage felt real I recognized the scars upon your face
Is life a mirror?
Leading back to whatever passes for the Maker?
I don’t know, my friend.
O the sleepers who have not seen Love
We run like ghosts in halls
We run like prisoners to freedom
I met you in the cold
Back when we were still girls
Skipping along the lines you see until you turn 22
I washed myself clean
And every wrong I’ve ever done
Is undone
And every wound
Is clean
And every sin
Is forgiven now
And passed into Time
Every sin is forgiven
I’m awake
I’m awake again
The slowest song has started and our perfumes mingle
O the sleepers who have not seen Love
We run like ghosts in halls
We run like prisoners to freedom
I went surfing today
And out there on the Ocean
I thought how it’s funny what the heart keeps in the sacred place
Locked up in our private universe
But it’s sad to see that the rest has burnt away
And in my dark burning head
You’re still asking questions
To things I can’t ever tell you
My hair is like the seaweed
Long and free
But my mind is like a traffic light
So tired
Of being at the crossroads
Of you and me
And even though they all say it’s the drugs which made you cold
I met you before all that
Before fast cars
Before the first funeral
Before we left school
And I always knew
Some pretty big things
Hung on shaky glue
Way down deep inside
We change but we don’t change
I’m a Buddhist I always was I just never knew
And with this world in darkness
And so many begging for some sign
It’s still the wild ocean that runs thru my dreams
I’m awake
I’m awake again
Hello world, I missed you
And the young couples walk thru the Park
Having loved
And the loners shuffle thru
Some in suits some in rags of blue
I don’t know where I’ll wind up
I don’t know who will take this earthly burden
Sometimes it’s only you some nights
That keeps me away from the chaos rainbow
I hope you made it to the warm places
Where we would always run, run, run
Run away too.
