The Train
The train stopped today and we hung on the bridge
Like children
I had my eye on sweet sixteen
I don’t have a heart
That’s Ok,
‘Cause it hurts to feel
But I keep getting reflections of things that used to be
They way you said I would someday look weathered
And does that mean I won’t be a movie star?
Was all I would ask when I was younger
These days there’s a lot more I could say
Been a long time since those hot wasted nights
Down on the rainy beach
Where we dived beneath the water
Where we surrendered
To lust and good drugs
To mouths and all the things our bodies want
But never use words like Love
Never use words like Love
Because Love was not enough
Not to the hustlers, not to the DJ at 3AM, not for River Phoenix, not to us anymore
The train stopped today and we hung on the bridge
Like children
I had my eye on sweet sixteen
Wearing an Astro Boy t-shirt
Straight out of 1982
I had the Stones on
I was lost
I was wearing my silver cross
Sometimes you meet someone
With the same tattoo
With the same scar
Call it what you want
And it’s enough
Sometimes it’s enough
I wonder if all the lights in the rave clubs
Ever get turned off
I’ve been out on the wire for weeks
I’ve been dressed sharp
I’ve been a ghost dialing it thru
I wish it was tomorrow
I wish it was next year
I wish I was you
‘Cause you got some of that happiness
That I lost in the dark time
You got some of those good feelings
That the poison corrupted and misused
I don’t know if I’ll ever be whole again
I can’t tell the future
I can only read the stars
But it’s all a secret and I might be mad I can’t tell you everything
The train stopped today and we hung on the bridge
Like children
Lonely, a little hurt, and used, and older now, than years ago
But like hunters for a chorus
Like whores for a hit song
And yearning for the water
To wash away
What it can
But all those called sinners don’t repent
They like what they do
You get used to the blood and regret
We parade down the river-side
With our collection of skull hearts around our fingers and across our necks
Where saints once rose and the flowers would sing
By the shores of the River King
And I can see the gates of that Palace
You used to talk about in dreams
And it might not be for me
But I was addicted to the sound of that vision
The train stopped today and we hung on the bridge
Like children
Hung there till they let us thru
Pale eyes so sweet
Looking out over the Ocean
I wonder what you see
I want to say
Something good and full of trust
My concern for you
So real
So unable to change now
But lost in the sound of negotiations
We aren’t moving catalogue
It’s all somewhere in between death and living
I can live with only dreams
But I need you to touch me while I’m sleeping
I never could sleep alone
That hasn’t changed
I want to say
Words that are like a shield
I don’t have a heart
That’s Ok
‘Cause feelings hurt
You don’t have nothing to worry about
I won’t say Love
I won’t say Love
I won’t say Love
The train stopped today and we hung on the bridge
Like children
With so much for us to do, so fragile are we.
