Baseball diamond
in the rough
Soft summer scent of newly mowed grass
Fragrant
aroma of sweat in the air
The players hold their hats over their hearts
as the national anthem plays
Waiting for the umpire to shout,
“Play ball!”
We know them all
Not just faces on pieces of cardboard
They are our icons
Our boys
Win or lose
The essence of our national pastime
Those who play for the love of game
Those who perform for the love of money
not important to us
Just that they play the game…
Baseball
Striking is for coal miners
Factory workers
Not for champions
Not for heroes
Heartbroken children will never understand
that some were not merely players
but…gods
Not unlike those of Mt Olympus
Simply covered in a blanket of grass
Getting paid like a man
To play the game of a child
