Wrong Way Street

Dim flickering streetlights
Shine as beacons to guide
A nameless drifter walks
In shadows he will hide
A half-waned moon shines faint
Showing the dark roadside
Trying to read the signs
Where the path will divide
Headlights bearing down hard
Through sable night they race
Straight from out of nowhere
Blinding beams in your face
Screaming like a bullet
Or a comet through space
As you calm in white light
It's gone without a trace
Piled up just off road
Wreckage of things long past
Lumps of twisted metal
Where things had gone too fast
So close to the exit
Where the lost souls amassed
Headlong to a dead end
Relentless shadows cast
Dim flickering starlight
Fades like old memories
A faceless drifter walks
Toward the headlights he sees
