The Reaper

As I came home the other day
I met death along the way
His sickle pressed against his cloak
He made no sound until he spoke
“Take heed my mortal friend
All things that begin must surely end”
I must say I felt some surprise
To see the reaper before my eyes
So I asked, “Good reaper, sir
Have you ended all things that were?”
“Yes, and all things that will be” he said with a grin
For you see dear boy, I am the end.”
I pondered over what the phantom had said
His words were burning in my head
So I did cautiously inquire;
“Are you the master of death and fire?”
“I wield the flames only hell can send
That shall damn all sinners in the end.”
As I stood before this effigy of doom
Who for all I knew could end me soon
I asked, “But are you not damned? Have you not sinned?
Every time you’ve used your sickle to reap souls in?”
“Indeed I often use my sickle to rend
But it is impossible to end the end.”
“I must depart, I have souls to reap
But in your mind my warnings keep,
It may be one year, it may be four
But I shall come knocking on your door
You live on time which I generously lend
But we’ll meet when I decide it is the end.”
Now kind reader, listen a bit more
And take heed from this ominous metaphor
Should you happen to meet death one day
And he has not come to take you away
Observe him from a distance, and learn my friend
That you not fear him when he comes in the end.
