leaves blow in slow motion
from tired looking trees
shivering against the afternoon
slate blue sky is threatening
to rain or maybe even snow
the traffic speeds along the road
indifferent to the landscape
escaping to outskirts and home
well lit and warm welcoming
leaves blow across the road
unrehearsed dance recital
pagan last rights of a season
spent and tattered party dress
the yellow lights glow
in windows now beckoning
hurry, hurry home
the dog is waiting at the door
tail wagging and tongue licking
smoke curls up the chimney
taking messages up to god
who may or may not pay attention
and the leaves blow
singing scratchy hollow songs
for those who stop to listen.

Oh Mer, you have such a happy heart....and it shows in your beautiful poetry. I felt the wind, I saw the leaves and the smoke going up to God. What marvelous imagery!
