Pappy lived in a big old house
smelling of a musky yesterday
lilac bushes grew outside the back door
and he always had a lot to say.
Related to President Taft he was
something like a third cousin it seemed
I loved him dearly that silly old man
Not really his kin but love to me he deemed.
Molly was his fluffy black companion
a scruffy meaow she displayed
came to him running by the clap of his hands
only for Pappy would she purr away.
The stories he told of his good old days
causing mischeif and mayhem galore
not a great dad to his seven boys
and grandma did show him the door.
He regretted his absence with heartfelt tears
and told me to never be afraid of love
that's what happened to him he said
now all he had were memories up above.
Hospital visits to him were such a joy
all the nurses thought him a dear old chap
trapped in bed he'd sing "Don't Fence Me In"
then laugh with glee as we clapped .
I remember the fights in his house after death
take this and that with all the shouting fools
ten years old and found my small voice
i'll not step foot in this house, you're all cruel.
I sat outside for twelve hours that day
while they tore apart everything he loved
hugged Molly 'til she had to go
then watched how they pushed and shoved.
I missed him so and asked god why
christians would act this way
Pappy threw you out of his life
and they only talk to you on sundays.
Pappy came through loud and clear
visited me under the lilac tree
he knew that was my favorite of all
Pappy knew it was there that I would see.
He was quite okay and awfully young
not looking like how i remembered him
more like the picture from the mantle
wearing the brown hat with the brim.
He stood there singing and laughing
when he said he was going to go
no need for tears my button girl
you'll understand when you grow.
Pappy's good and happy now
you'll see when you come home my way
believe in how you FEEL my child
don't always listen to everything they say.
Then all at once he wasn't there
my first visit but never my last
i fell asleep calmly that night
and knew the anger had past.
Many years later at a table full of folk
sitting around remembering a time
ashamed of their actions, their words and their greed
I just smiled and felt Pappy's hand in mine.

How very heartfelt jaymee how very sweet
I had an uncle like pappy and he was so neat!
Whenever he came to visit, I'd sit at his feet!
He was my Uncle Doc....and no one could ever love him more than I.
When he died, it was like losing an eye. So painful, so hurtful, and he was so good.
i've tried to follow in his footsteps if only i could!
When I finished your poem I loved Pappy too!
What a lovely dedication to his memory and your for him too!
Love you
