One day I had double Calculus. This is what I wrote in that class. I think it is far more productive than learning, say, recipricol identities.
People often reflect upon
Just how far we humans have come
How the Dark Ages have come and gone
And brag about all the things we’ve done
And yes to some extent this is true
Berlin tore down the mighty wall
Columbus sailed the ocean blue
And we’ve seen the statues of Stalin fall
But…..
The unprovoked slaughter of million of Jews
While for so long, America looked the other way
The meaningless killing the cameras finally viewed
When the war ended on that “joyous” day
While we’ve come a long way I must protest
Can we call the Holocaust progress?
We read the works that Shakespeare wrote
And every day planes soar up high
Women have the right to vote
And our buildings touch the sky
But…
That fatal day this past September
When that jet first crashed into the tower
All of us will always remember
The terror of that fatal hour
While we come a long way I must protest
Can we call Jihad progress?
The Statue of Liberty stands her ground
And polio’s no longer on the world scene
The X-1 flew at the speed of sound
And we’re hard at work on an Aids vaccine
But…
Crime is still steadily on the rise
And though the civil war’s long over we must face the fact
That we cannot without guilt avert our eyes
While whites still kill whites and blacks kill blacks
While we’ve come a long way I must protest
Can we call murder progress?
We’ve found the Titanic, deep beneath the waves
And the DNA code has been solved
We have more methods than ever with which to save
Lives-and scientists know how we evolved
But…
The IRA isn’t interested in peace
There’s still soldiers missing in the jungles of Vietnam
No sign of the end of the fighting in the Middle East
And more countries possess the atom bomb
While we’ve come a long way I must protest
Can we call war progress?
The astronauts are exploring space
And the navy is still patrolling the sea
Each person continues life in their place
And thank God America is still free
But…
Though Hitler is dead the Neo-Nazis go on
And India is at odds with Pakistan
Prisoners are shot at the crack of dawn
And the Taliban fights to the very last man
While we’ve come a long way I must protest
Can we call violence progress?
Though cell phones connect us hate still divides us
We need to care more about what is inside us
And until we all see through our own eyes
That we share one boundless reach of sky
There will still be war, and with it death
As this planet, terrified, holds its breath
And watches as all things come to pass
Tyrant replaces tyrant-one worse than the last
Until finally there will be no safe harbor
Freedom will get smaller, and the graveyards larger
Until we come to our senses-and we hear the last bomb drop
And collectively, as ONE people yell STOP!!!
………Until that day I most protest:
Have we really made any progress?
