The Boater's Jamboree - Marlin Deviation

Contributed by norm on Monday, 3rd November 2003 @ 10:24:34 AM in AEST
Topic: dedicatedpoems

There are those who boat, and those who gloat,
There are those who jam the sea.
For all that I know, there are those who row,
To the boaters Jamboree.

It is here that they come, an enormous sum,
With crafts both small and large,
As most folks know, forget the blow
You are safe on the BAYGULL barge

Now, the BAYGULL barge is the boat in charge
The others line up for review,
For the BAYGULL barge does review at large,
All boats whether old or new.

The captains stand on the dock and land,
Awaiting the cannon's roar,
The cannon's primed and it's all been timed
With precision, to leave the shore.

Boom, goes the gun and the captains run
The parade is about to depart,
And the BAYGULL float hasn't time to dote
The boats are lined up for the start.

The boats are off and they're heading north,
Toward New York and the lower bays,
Verazano's span, seen by every man,
Was a sight thru the smoke and haze.

The armada proud, with their engines loud,
And the burgees waving nigh,
From the transom staffs, and the sailboat gaffs
Were the streamers floating high.

Past Sandy Hook was the route they took,
As they crossed to New York's lower bay,
The Hudson's flow made the boats go slow,
As the tide started out that day.

The captains saw that the boats did yaw,
They were pulled to a westerly run,
Nothing but lark could account for the arc
That the boats took that day in the sun.

The boats with aglaze, looked ahead thru the haze
And they saw the Amboys dead-on,
The Amboys, indeed, and with cruise-rapid speed,
The boats skimmed the water head-on.

Nearer and nearer until it was clearer
The boats had a life of their own,
Two hundred seventy the compass used brevity
Together we stayed on the phone.

They formed in a line, as straight as a pine,
And bobbed like a bubble machine,
It was then it was found, the boats were all bound
To salute the town hero, McKeon.

McKeon I'm sure, is a man to endure,
He's the head of the Marlin team,
Every man who was there, was sure well aware
That Jack made the Marlins, a dream.

South Amboy one morn, was the town Jack was born
They're ever so proud, don't you see,
Jack was their son, for now he had won
The World Series of Two Thousand Three.

The horns did blast and the bells rang fast
And the whistles let out a big squawk,
Then, silence prevailed as the captains all hailed
And the boats swung around toward New York.

The boats had their say, it was late in the day
So they started back toward the Hook,
Again they adjusted and everyone trusted
They'd head for the south, by the book.

Then back to the docks, they put back their clocks,
They readied for barbeque,
Each washed his hull so not to be dull,
And the laughter and glee went askew.

Get you a chart and see where we start
And follow the route that we took,
Verazano's bridge, on the chart, looks a midge
As also does Point Sandy Hook.

Next year get a boat, and we'll send you a note
Inviting you go without fee,
You'll join in the fun, have a day in the sun
with the boater's Jamboree.

Wow Norm that was quite a race.
I could fill the water in my face.
I followed it all in my mind.
Best race I've ever encountered t find!

What wonderful memories you have my friend,
And you are so gracious to share them again and again.
So I'll be ready, although water I'm scared.
I'll put on my vest, and hope we to be spared!
I'll be there, if you bring the beer.
I'll bring the steaks from Wyoming Steer!
Bon voyage Captain... I here!
