A Farmer in Bib Overalls - My Papa

Contributed by peg on Wednesday, 29th October 2003 @ 10:36:07 AM in AEST
Topic: Nostalgic

A farmer was my Papa on a piece of rocky ground
I think it was the rockiest place for many miles around
He planted beans and tomatoes and prayed for a good crop
Some years he just watched it burn when temperatures didn't drop
His hands were worn and calloused and dirt beneath each nail
But so gentle they could be when filling the ole milk pail
Bib overalls became dress clothes with a clean white shirt and tie
To funerals that is what he'd wear but I never saw him cry
On his lap he would hold me and whistle a nameless tune
And tell me, "it's ole blue Monday but it will be Tuesday soon"
I realize now that times were tough but never did he complain
'Cept when the crops were burring up and there wasn't a drop of rain
I didn't know, until too late, Papa could be quite funny
And laugh at his own jokes 'til his eyes with tears were runny
So many things I will never know about my Papa, the man
Questions never asked or answered, "What was it like to stand-
In France upon a battlefield, were you scared, were you brave"?
Never did you mention it and one picture only did you save
"How did you meet my Mama, was it love at first sight,
Did you meet her in the the day time or on a moon lit night"?
I will never know so many things for you died much to young
I'll never hear you play your fiddle or hear the songs you sung
Although my mind will always play the memories of you
A farmer in bib overalls, a man whose word was true
I wish I had told you more often - I love you Papa

Once again, I wish I would have known my Grandpa. He sounded like someone I'd love to talk to, to hear about all the stories... You did good here mom! Love ya, Robbie

...that literally brought tears to my eyes.

Most likely because that's how my dad talks about his father, who died before I was born.

I really, really like this poem.

I enjoyed this poem it reminded me of my gramps. I knew him as well as an 8 yr old can know someone. He was my hero and he was a wonderful honest man. This was a great write. `Day`
