Green lantern ring

Green lantern ring

Somebody called somebody
on the Green Lantern ring

And I was jerked out of sleep
Back into years ago

When everything I did
Meant something symbolic
And life was like reading Jack Kerouac

Back when, we were still girls
And we were frigid, like ice floats
In the Thanksgiving Parade

I’m getting mixed signals

Blurred images thru my midnight head
Strung out on Coca-Cola

Diving in and out of the pool with so many pretty people
Acting the clown
Going to sleep alone while they burnt out their desires

I have to hit re-run

I remember Dungeons and Dragons
I remember not having a cool haircut

I remember the code of the comic book stores
Where I used to steal “Punisher”
Up at nights with you reading “War Journal”

Back when everybody loved you and found you charming

Now it’s such a different world
So many people abuse you
For dreams that turned to ash

So many lies and just as many liars
But I always stood up for you

I always stood up for you
Till they took my knees away
And they made me pay and pay

And now you are still in the old place
With long brown hair and a tiny little attention span
Measuring out your life with the magical cards

Tell me, what happens when you dial up Death
Or run out of refuges to run away to

What happened to you?
Is there anything I can do?

I think I’m missing something important
Give me a clue give me a clue

I remember the way you have to think so much
And you’ve even got morals
Me, I’m just empty as an advert

I remember the way you were always two months behind Hollywood
I kinda found that charming too

Back when, we were still girls
And we were frigid, like ice floats
In the Thanksgiving Parade

Now I go to films alone
Impeccably dressed
And I go to see Morrissey with my sister

I like eyes that are like lasers
I like girls who have just turned 22
I like the way you look in photographs

And the navel we used to gaze upon
Has become a stomach with a jeweled little belly button
Which many mouths have caressed

And many lips have had their way with me
And many the hips of the statuesque blonde
Have ridden their way home on me

Oh, but I can’t listen to songs from that phase of our lives
Without falling in love again

I swear I wouldn’t lie to make you feel better
But my heart still has the love underneath the scars

And I’d have two hours for you
I’d have two hours for you

We could spend it just kissing
Kissing and missing

I could wear my beige suit and my dark sunglasses
And you could cut your hair in a bob
And dye everything all strawberry

And we could make out to pop culture

I think I’ve written a love song
To love in my own way
To love all my life
Until I curl up and die

Well the earth must have gone to Hell
It’s all frozen over

And just you and me are the survivors
Dancing to un-danceable songs

Settling in for the James Dean marathon

You like a message
You like a good film

Everything is make-up
Everything is fake
Everything is beautiful

I couldn’t do better than that
But I’m happy to try

I’m only afraid of half the things that used to scare me
And that almost makes me brave.
