Dicky got so he liked to stir the MudPies.
I kept telling him, "Don't stir so fast,
Dicky, you're doing it too hard,
you're going to get it in your eyes!"
Dicky said, "You're not my Mother!"
"I said, "I know I'm not your Mother, Dicky!"
He must a' meant another.
"Would you like to put some carrots
in our cookies, Dicky?"
Dicky never said much until he thought
I was his mother!"
"Let's go get some carrots
out of my Daddy's garden,
if they aren't very icky!
See those long green tops?
Watch me Dicky, you just pull 'em like this,
only when they are itty bitty like, you have to
put 'em back to bake some more!
We've pulled a whole row, and they aren't
baked yet, be sure you put them back in Dicky,
so they can stay set!"
"Oh, well, I wish I had some sugar!"
And that's when Dicky said,
"I have lots of sugar at my house!"
Then he took me by the hand, down the alley,
and back across the bad street again!
Dicky's basement was outside.
My basement was inside.
Down some steps, and there it was, real
sugar, a great big sackful.
We had to pull it up the steps, it was a handful!
I pulled, and Dicky pushed.....
across the bad street,
and down my alley, as the sugar whoosed!
We left a nice white line, and got to my backyard
before it was all gone, just in time!
Now our MudPies were more white.
Like the sugar cookies my Grandma makes
that taste just right!
Dicky and me were making nice Mudpies all
afternoon, and the sidewalks were all full of them,
We even tasted a couple, if they didn't crumble.
"Oh Look Dicky, here comes my Daddy's
big truck, we're in luck!
We can give him some of our cookies to eat.
I'll bet he'd like a nice treat!"
When the door on his big truck did slam,
I heard the yelling, and the Germany talking,
and then I saw Dicky, my friend ran!
My Daddy was from Germany Land,
And whenever he got really mad,
he would yell that Germany bad, and anyone
would know he wasn't glad!
I heard, "Radishing sugar,
and how will you pay this back?"
50 whole pounds in one sack!"
Then he pushed me aside, threw sugar all
over his back, and carried that sack.....
clear down the alley to Mrssss. Wilson's house!"
I didn't see my friend Dicky for a long time after
that, even though, I crawled up on the ashpit and sat.
But I knew Dicky was my friend, and I knew
Dicky would be back!"
We just borrowed a little sugar for our MudPies
I didn't tell any lies.
When my Daddy said, "Where did you get it?"
and then he spit, and I told him every bit!
The next night when my Daddy was spraying
his garden with the hose.
He said, "These carrots, just look at those rows?"
Then he started yelling that Germany bad.
He asked me if I had pulled 'em up, it was sad!
I told him I put them back to cook....
But he just kept yelling, "Just look, you took!"
But I put them back to bake,
That was a terrible mistake.
Then I cried, and cried, but maybe,
I don't know, maybe, I lied!
(to be continued next week, when Dicky & me
want to be beautiful, and so we powder
ourselves all over with
some really hot burning stuff!)

Great going, Connie. Now, I'm impatiently looking forward to read its third part! Surely, that would be as good as this one!

Gosh, they should explain things better to children. I am almost afraid to read chapter 3. I am afraid you will really get in trouble next. This is beyond cute.
