Homicide detectives told the parents of missing Victorian toddler Daniel Thomas they did not expect to find him alive.
Police interviewed the sick two-year-old's mother, Donna Thomas, for more than 12 hours, after she had come forward with new information about his disappearance from a house in Myrtleford, in north-east Victoria, last Friday afternoon.
Detective Senior Sergeant Rowland Legg said police were trying to establish whether Daniel had been abducted from the Standish Street house before or after his babysitter returned from a three-hour trip to nearby Wangaratta.
"All we know is the babysitter and her family were in Wangaratta that afternoon, Friday, and we're still working on timelines, and when Daniel might have been taken from the house," Senior Sergeant Legg told reporters.
"It is probably unlikely that we're going to find Daniel alive.
"We've come to the unfortunate position that it's less likely that (whoever) has taken him is caring for him."
Senior Sergeant Legg said the interview with Ms Thomas - which moved from Myrtleford to Wangaratta station and continued until 2am (AEST) - covered last week's events, and Daniel's physical and emotional condition.
"There was some information that he hadn't been in childcare for a couple of weeks leading up to his disappearance," he said.
Daniel suffers from asthma, and was wearing heavy bandages to cover severe eczema when last seen.
A scaled-down search covered a Myrtleford waste treatment plant and Nug Nug Caves, a culturally sensitive site for the local Aboriginal community in the Mt Buffalo National Park.
Police also searched local mine shafts, and doorknocked around the area where Daniel was last seen.
"All aspects are being reassessed," Senior Sergeant Legg said.
"We have evidence, but we don't have Daniel."

Oh dear Sharon. I refuse to lose faith aswell. I believe too many people lost faith in Coral Burrows. And that reminds me, I have some more news on that poor soul, can't post yet as I have reached my three poem limit. I shall pray for this poor baby boy, praying he will be returned safely to where he belongs. He will be in my dreams, prayers and heart.
