I
In the north is Ciòrann
In the Vale of the Pass
Around him the high standers
The tall shining mountains
The hills of white snow
In the forest is his fire
Below the dark branches
With him brave comrades
Companions of the wilderness
The wide-spreading vale they watch
Guarding the twisting pass
Holding the way against their foe
The wolves of the wild lands
The Children of the Mist
Bright the spears of the watchers
Bitter their tongues of steel
A defense against the wild weapons
Of the cruel-hacking foe
Lonely the harp of Ciòrann sings
Only voice in the wide land
As he sits beside the fire
The light is on the silver strings
The throb is in the air
Alone he walks in the forest
Around him all the trees are silent
He hears afar the mourning-sound
A fair voice uplifted in sorrow
Slowly Ciòrann approaches the sound
The fear of the fair folk is on him
A maid he finds with the tears upon her
Her way lost in the wide woods
A deep hurt is on her fair leg
Like flame is her hair
Tasael of the Children of the Mist
A slender doe among the wolves
A pearl among the gray rocks of the north
II
Quietly Ciòrann speaks peace to her
Gently his hands mend her hurt
Then he lays hand on harpstring
Richly strains the soothing music
Through the dark northerwoods
The light in the eyes of Tasael brightens
The notes weave their spell in the trees
No more are these two enemies
Friendship binds them to itself
Her way found again
Tasael sets her feet to her path
Once again to join the wandering ones
She bids farewell to Ciòrann
They know not their hearts are turned to each other
Brightly the stars wheel over the wide land
In the woven wood the leaves fall
Winter takes up his reign
Over the lands of the Children of Tiras
Now Tasael walks sorrowfully in the land
The wild ones of the mist are no consolation
In her heart she yearns for the sound
Of the music of Ciòrann’s harp
There is no brilliance in her eyes
Like a shadow she moves through the trees
Approaching Ciòrann’s lonely fire
Glad her welcome there
Their hearts are warm again
Trysts now they keep
By light of star and the slanting sun
Their love grow deep
As the wide winter comes
Their hearts are never cold
Under the dark trees they walk
The harpstrings are sounded
Old tales Ciòrann tells
There is no enmity between them
III
Slow is winter to lift in the north
The snows are still deep
But there is no good in the heart of the Rebel
A cunning plan is in his mind
Men make themselves ready for war
Great the host of fell men
By secret paths they are led through the mountains
Unseen they pass into the south
To strike a fell blow at unawares
The city of the south they assault
Greatest of the dwellings of the island-folk
Great the slaughter there
Red run the blades of the raiders
Red run the flames up the halls
To the king’s very palace they come
And meet the fury of the Elder King
At Deol’s great blade they fall
They are dying; they flee
By the hand of the king the evil ones are routed
They flee across the land to the north
But in Valamaur the blood is red
The devouring flames leap high
The people wail in the streets
Sad the destruction wrought there
Evil the fate of the Children of Tiras
Children without a mother
Young wife without a husband
Flames the wrath of the king
The dead lie upon the streets
The wolves will not go unpunished
The summons goes far and wide
The Children of Tiras arm for war
The great clan rises up
Their wrath gleams redly
Fear grips the Children of the Mist
They flee into the wild places
IV
In the north is Ciòrann
The summons comes to that place
The men make ready
For an immanent war
Their swords are with them as they sleep
Ciòrann goes alone to the place
Where he and the red-haired one would tryst
Alone he watches the forest
Will she come to him again?
When the sun is falling she comes
Under the trees they meet again
But this is no cheerful greeting
The tears sparkle brightly
In the red-haired one’s eyes
Grieved is Tasael tonight
She must part from her lover
Her people flee to the barren lands
That path she must tread
Grievous the parting of those two
Great are the tears that roll down
Beneath the dark trees
They kiss who will no more
Who must walk away into the dark
Alas for those two
Who must be enemies who are not
Their paths ahead are cold
As they turn away from each other
Now the days grow longer
The bright swords pass into the north
The Children of the Mist flee
Giving way before Deol’s host
Their spears no match for the shields of the warriors
Ciòrann marches with the host
His heart is not with him
Tasael walks the hard paths with her people
Her tears wet the way
V
In the far north is a wild refuge
A scape of mountains hard and chill
There the misty ones wend their way
To avoid the vengeance of the islanders
They make the cold cliffs and pinnacles their fort
Now there is battle in the high places
Spears strike amid the rocks
Blood stains the forgotten ground
Where none save the evil fay have walked
The warriors of Deol press forward
Valad’s men fall before them
Hunters through the hills they are
Their king leads them
His sword flashes in the cold sunlight
Far into the crags the enemies flee
Desperately they fight and die
Their lord drives them on
Valad the Rebel is ever stirring them again
Alone Tasael walks in the mist
About her the hard crags
Silently her heart weeps
Wishing to see her love once more
Wishing to hear the harp at his shoulder
Alone the spies find her
Deol’s men seeking ways through the wilderness
They make her captive and bind her
And bring her before the Elder King
Great fear is upon her
In the king’s presence she trembles
But Deol treats her not as an enemy
He speaks soft words to her
He does not condemn her for her affinities
Wisdom is upon the great king’s brow
Justice and mercy are in his hands
Tasael loves him for his goodness
She forsakes Valad the Rebel
VI
Now the Children of the Mist are trapped
Their fastness turned against them
Deol’s men descend upon them in the morning
There is bitter battle
Cries echo through the high places
Great is the slaughter that day
Companies fall upon the stones
The sons of Tiras lead on their men
Deol and Valad meet in battle
Furious flash the ringing blades
In the hands of the sons of Tiras
Swords both by the hand of Deol made
Long ago he wrought them both
He and Valad had stood together in battle
There is no thankfulness in the Rebel’s heart
Only hot hate to the king of the island
He keeps no thought of the past
This is a fight to the death
Sad the fate of the sons of Tiras!
Long they fought among the stones
Through their shirts of mail they bleed
At last the Rebel is stricken down
He falls to a low place inglorious
Sad was that deed to the king
To slay nearest of kin
He was a righteous one
Alas! Fated to fall that day also
Covered in fell wounds
The king sinks to the ground
On the cold stone he breathes his last
The mightiest man in the land dies
Alas that this fell day dawned!
The Children of the mist are defeated
Their lord is now dead
His fell will drives them no more
Their weapons fall from their hands
VII
Tears are in the eyes of Deol’s men
Weeping as they see their king
Gently they lift him up
Rinsing the red blood from his body
Cleansing him of the gore of battle
Now he lies upon a bed
Torches burn about him
Men mourn to see him
Their tears sparkle in the torchlight
Beside the king Tasael weeps
Softly she sobs in the quiet
Tending him with gentle hands
Not leaving his side
She shows her gratitude to the fallen one
Ciòrann searches for her
Walking among the Children of the Mist
He cannot find her
His heart is heavy within him
Ciòrann turns back
His steps take him to the pavilion of Deol
He goes to pay a last respect
He kneels before the bed
White-robed the king sleeps
A jewel is on Deol’s breast
The torchlight glances on it
And illuminates a figure
Sitting silent in the gloom
Slowly Ciòrann rises up
He recognizes Tasael
She looks up into his face
Silent they smile at each other
Sudden gladness fills their hearts
They walk where the sun is warm
Its light fills them both
They embrace again at last
They will not be parted again

Extremely long....
But it's a richly eloquent work of art once you've finished it.
I like it, however long it may be.

Not bad for epic verse, but personally I prefer Venkat's anyhow. Nonetheless this was a good run. |

Great read...
It has wings in flights and perhaps a Tolkein-esque potential as from his encounter with the Red Book of Hergest...
It maybe just how my brain works but if Peter Jackson or Mel Gibson encountered this a film may follow.
Great Job
Peace
