The real heroes,
are fighting in Iraq
without salaries of millions.
They fight the enemy,
they fight fatigue,
bodies and hearts in pain
"The boys of summer"
will always have another season.
Their biggest enemy being the rain.
The soldiers are hit with bullets,
not a wild pitch thrown at them
nor a chance to get even with their assailant.
Their wounds bleed ,
and sometimes they die,
without the cameras and cheering crowd.
No high fives ,or a pat on the butt
when they come home,
less an arm or a leg.
No photo op with the president,
as they give him a game ball,
shake hands and laugh out loud.

I'm a big fan of baseball, but I'm also a soldier, in fact I just came home. Thank you for this poem, people just don't know what it's like overthere. And I agree some of us don't get another season, other do. Thank you again.

PB, Top marks for this one. Well expressed antagonism to a significant propportion of the domestic scene.
This is the difference between total war i.e. WW1 and WW2 and subsequent conflicts like
Korea, Vietnam, Iraq in which there was far from 100% support and which were fought by proffesional soldiers who had chosen the forces as a career.
In total war sport and entertainment were encouraged as morale boosters and relief from the never ending tragedy whereas (particulaly in the British Empire over the last150 years) there was never a time when some of our troops were't fighting somewhere while life went on normally at home.
We argue from a point of view but we are not all stood on the same point.
