Afflicted with scoliosis, a disease
That bends and curves the sufferer’s body low-
She suffered silently and without cease
And sorrow marked her pale and wrinkled brow.
Bent over, crooked and curved the woman went
Avoiding crowds on her laborious way
Remembering not when she could upright stand
When Jesus called her on a Sabbath Day.
In pity He did call her unto Him
To lay His hands upon the woman’s head
As she reached out to touch His garment’s seam
Contorted as she was, grotesque and sad.
His hands upon her now the Savior laid
While scribes stood watching full of craft and guile
As suddenly the women stood up straight
Erect, and with a beatific smile.
But lo! The squabblers started to revile
The Savior for the wondrous healing deed
They murmured, nettled and began to rile:
“Its wrong on Sabbath day the sick to treat”
“To heal on Sabbath is against the Law”!
They murmured angrily and in dismay
“Let the authorities conclusions draw
And punish him that heals on Sabbath Day”.
“She‘s Abraham’s daughter too“ the Savior spoke
“Your hardened hearts wish not that she be healed
Though cruel was her burden and her yoke--
But I tell you that -Yes, - the Father willed”!
They slinked away with jaundiced spleen and bile:
“He broke the Sabbath yet again“! they nagged-
The women with a grateful radiant smile
Would henceforth go her way, her frame erect.
The Savior‘s eyes digressed as He foresaw
In far-off days poor women lowly bent
By arbitrary institutional Law
And seeing it - His tender heart was rent.

Stunning portrayal of the story in the Bible. Because the Bible tells stories so quickly there's much emotional detail left out sometimes. But this story told the story between the lines. Beautiful write. |

Dear Elizabeth, Abraham's Daughter is a great poem. Its the kind of poem I primarily want to do. You have an understanding of your subject. I agree with Jellybellyprincess about the emotions that make it interesting. We can relate to the story better with emotions involved. Good going. Bizzy |
