My Life Growing Up

My Life Growing Up

I grew up,
In a small old town.
Where the only thing new,
Was the grass on the ground.

Out in the yard,
We knew to stay.
We went barefoot,
And played all day.

Life was simple,
But times were hard.
The only thing I could give mom for Christmas,
Was a homemade card.

I learned the take care,
Of what we had.
Though we hadn’t a lot,
It wasn’t that bad.

There were clothes on our back,
And food on the table.
You learned to eat it all,
If you were able.

I had seven brothers and sisters,
And I was in the middle.
But never did I feel,
I was second fiddle.

We were taught about respect,
While shown great love.
And we learned to give thanks,
To the great God above.

My father worked the coal mines,
Where he spent most of the day.
My mother took charge,
While he was away.

We learned how to work,
We all did our share.
Mom appreciated a job done well,
We learned to care.

I didn’t have extras,
Hand-me-downs had to do okay.
But it was the best kind of life,
In every single way.

Fun in our household,
Wasn’t a night on the town.
It was an occasional movie rental.
With the family all around.

Happiness we found,
Can’t be bought in a store,
It’s living in harmony,
Who could ask for anything more?

Wonderful! You learned early what the true riches in life are.
