summer's retreat

Contributed by Merry on Tuesday, 7th October 2003 @ 11:11:21 AM in AEST
Topic: goodbyepoetry

idle resorts stretch out their beaches
white sands turned cold and damp
the season of the sun has left us
in cool shades of gray winter
mornings with frost on the ground
and the dog’s bark echoes farther
unimpeded by the leaves of summer greenery
scratchy sweater irritates soft skin
hands wrapped around a hot cuppa tea
steam bathes my faces in lovely heat
pale again now that my summer love is gone
his bright and shining countenance
brought laughter to my rosy lips
now chapped and cracked
no laughter for a cold dark morn
his eyes of bluest sky are gone
day by day we sang his carefree song
I didn’t notice him slip away
so quietly he turned from me
then one day he was simply gone

~merry~

My youth was spent on Jersey's shore,
With boardwalks and the sand galore,
And taffy smell and popcorn, too
And the smell of fish in this milieu.

Your poem brought back when Labor Day
Ended all the fun and play,
We had to live the winter thru
And plan next year the things we'd do.
