Becky used to be a college star
Now, she waits tables and worries about the rent
But she’s kept her books and journal articles
And they still cover her living room floor
She can’t read the way she used to
When her mind was young and sharp
But she keeps a book by her bed
And a stack just inside the front door
And she browses the titles each day
Remembering how much she loved the authors
She vows to reread the old and finish the new
But she isn’t sure just what she’s waiting for
So she reads a line or two each evening
When she gets in from a long day of work
And, although she goes slower than she used to,
She loves each word she reads more than ever before
She can’t remember all the theories she used to know
But she doesn’t seem to care
Somehow in losing all she once knew
She’s finding the truth that’s at her core
