THE DARK

THE DARK

They stood cold and shivering,
covered from the rain by the porch.
She was soaked in fear and dread,
As he fumbled with his torch.

The wind was growing stronger,
the clouds were moving fast.
The night was getting darker,
until the batteries worked at last.

“So you say it moved very quickly
and went down into the cellar?”
She nodded to him confirmation
Afraid it’s actions proved it clever.

“Thought they’d killed the last of them
But they show themselves only stronger,
If it is, as the prophecy says, the return......
Your peace you’ll know not longer.

The days have gone to watch the corn,
Sway freshly in the breeze
To be replaced by bitter hours
As winds stir up dead leaves.”

They slowly trod the soaking grass
Towards the cellar’s hidden door
Nervously he shone the torch
On the wooden hatch flat on the floor

To the horror of the trembling girl
The hatch slowly started to open
And then the night was black again
As the torch confirmed it was broken

She was pushed to the floor, then dragged
Her breath was sucked away by her fear
Her desperate words weak and trembling,
“Please help me, get the light over here!”

“Can’t do that, they’re afraid of the dark
Please realise all evil has a stem,
It’s plain and simple if you think it through,”
he sighed - “Somebody has to feed them.”

The last verse should read,
Can't do that they're afraid of the light!
Sorry, an error I didn't notice.
Hope you like,
Manda2
