Do you remember when we were soldiers?
How we laughed and cried,
While all around us our comrades died
The coffins, the medals, the bugle’s wail
The tear stained letters, the widow’s veil?
Yes, my dear friend, I remember it well
The shattered bodies, the living hell
The cries of the dying, the silence of the dead
The shells screaming high o’er my head
Sleeping in the mud back to back
Waiting to fight off another attack
The time when we were soldiers
Will remain forever imbedded in my mind
And when I lie in bed at night, I often find
That I can see in my mind’s eye
The burning fighters in the sky
The midnight bombings that kept us from sleep
The graves were shallow, the fear was deep
Do you remember those two kids, god they were naïve and young
They came with hope and propaganda on their tongues
But war worked her cruel way
They arrived that night and were killed the next day
Do you remember how it turned out that they were brothers
And what they told us happened to their mother
When she heard that she had lost her sons?
She squeezed the trigger of a gun
And took her life, took her last breath
Succumbed to the cold relief of death
And how could I forget when Bill stepped on the mine-
Got blown away, and how we couldn’t find
Any part of him-and how much it hurt
To send his family an urn filled with dust and dirt
How those we had just buried beneath the barbed wire
Were dug up again by the artillery fire
Yes my dear friend, I remember it well
The terrified faces, the living hell
The pain of the wounded, the peace of the dead
The shells screaming high o’er my head
Praying in the mud, back to back
Waiting to die in the next attack
Robinson, MacDonald, Henderson, Clyde
The list goes on inside my mind
The massive list of those lost
The mountains of lives that damned war cost
And for what I ask you! Nothing changed
When we got back home things were still the same
Except now all of the horrible sights
That I saw haunt me when I sleep at night
Do you remember when we were soldiers?
How we laughed and cried
While all around us our comrades died?
The coffins, the medals, the bugle’s wail
The tear-stained letters, the widows veil.

Wowsers. I'm going to leave the 4th stanza alone and give this a 4.6 on the Nortiscale. |
