Song of a Forgotten Battlefield

war

You may see the green grass growing
And wander upon it without knowing
What took place where you now stand
That forever tarnished this plot of land
The gruesome scene, the battle line
Lie buried in the sands of time
Sit now and listen to my tale
Of a nation torn apart by the hail
Of bullets-go back a hundred years
To the day this dreadful field of tears
Earned its name-the battle cry, the snare drum’s reel
The screams of pain, the clash of steel
The sun was rising in the east
Shining rays of light in peace
The golden shafts striking the face
Of the water in this peaceful place
The day was here-the night was done
It was time for the horror of war to come.
At first it could barely be heard
Like the whisper of an unholy word
A distant booming-such that one could not wonder
If the sound was not just merely thunder
And there was lightening, but in this case
It came from a rifle’s snarling face.
And the battle finally spilled over a hill
(Now the devil would drink his fill)
This Lightening storm was caused by man
Fallen from grace, and from God’s hand
And now the storm came into plain view
The bloody ranks of grey and blue.
