unanswered prayers flutter out of my hands
long skirt falls over my legs dragging in the snow
my lungs drink in the cold sting of winter air
walking another few miles won’t matter
the distance is not near nor is it far
this terrible winter of my life seems endless
without hope of spring to welcome me
michaelmas is long past but a memory
with its pretty songs and joyous message
that warmth has fled these hands
and left me with nothing but emptiness
